The Audition
When Academy Award-winning director Jane Campion goes back to New Zealand to talk her writer mother, Edith, into a small role in a film, she meets a certain amount of resistance. Although her mother was once an actress, she is reluctant to appear as a teacher in Campion’s An Angel at My Table, complaining that her daughter’s attitude made her uncomfortable. Filmed by the director’s sister, Anna, The Audition is a study of the complex nature of the mother/daughter relationship, as Jane does not always agree with her mother’s viewpoints.
