Shudder in June: FIND YOUR FRIENDS, FORBIDDEN FRUITS, THE VOICES OF OUR MOTHER and More

Summer does not officially begin until the third week of June but Winter was such a slog and May has been very much, “It May snow today”, or, “It May rain today”, or, “It May be blistering hot for like five minutes today”, we just want a season that picks a lane and sticks with it.  Shudder will bring some heat of its own with June’s lineup of originals and rep programming. Ladies are in focus next month with Izabel Pakzad’s soon-to-be much talked about, Find Your Friends, Meredith Alloway’s Forbidden Fruits, Lucile Hadzihalilovic’s award-winning The Ice Tower, and a focus on moms in Mark O’Brien’s The Voices of Our Mother.  Episodes of classic Tales From The Crypt continue for all territories while subscribes in the U.S. get…

Echoes: 2026 Might Be the Biggest Movie Year in a Decade. Or a Nasty Face-Plant.

Echoes: 2026 Might Be the Biggest Movie Year in a Decade. Or a Nasty Face-Plant.

For the first time in years, 2026 could prove to be electrifying. The three major franchise empires are at war as they are trying to redefine themselves, especially with new DC Studios co-heads, Peter Safran and James Gunn. Inspired by the Japanese aquarium industry and the Greek myth of the sirens, Kotzamani builds a romantic yet melancholy world of beautiful mermaids, exploring feminine power and girlhood through a modern fairy tale. At Cannes, I had the privilege of speaking with Konstantina Kotzamani about her latest film that was ten years in the making. ScreenAnarchy: How did the film come about?  Konstantina Kotzamani: I was in Argentina writing a script for another feature film. While I was drinking my morning coffee, an article about five Japanese girls with silicon mermaid tails popped up on…

Sound And Vision: Timur Bekmambetov

Sound And Vision: Timur Bekmambetov

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we take a look at several music videos directed by Timur Bekmambetov. I rarely discuss tie-in music videos, music videos that are made to accompany a feature. Not because I am against them, but because I think the main reason for the existence of the Sound and Vision is the disparity between a filmmaker’s output in music videos and features. If a music video is already tied into a feature, there is not much more for me to say or compare. Rarely is there something interesting to add. Enter Timur Bekmambetov. He made many music videos early in his career, mostly for the singer Chicherina….
