RIVER: Independent Film Company and Shudder Acquire Joshua Giuliano’s Debut Survival Slasher

Independent Film Company and Shudder have acquired Joshua Giuliano’s (pictured above) debut feature film, a survival slasher called River. The flick is currently in post, and Independent will introduce it to buyers at the upcoming AFM. The company plans on doing its own theatrical release, but no date was shared today.    River is based on Giuliano’s short film In Sound We Live Forever, which received a special mention from the Fantasia International Film Festival in 2019. She probes the mind of a mother whose son committed a school massacre in We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) and examines the complex emotionality of a jaded hitman in You Were Never Really Here (2017). Beyond Fest Chicago 2026: L.A. Genre Fest Announces First Geographical Expansion

The folks at Beyond Fest have announced their first geographical expansion, heading to the Windy City in April, 2026.    The festival will bring their eclectic programming style to the Music Box Theatre, no stranger to weird, wonderful and wacked-out genre cinema from around the globe. This is a built-in audience that will be eager to shake off Winter’s chill and welcome Spring with some genre madness come April.    Submissions through the festival’s FilmFreeway account are now open, with a special emphasis for local filmmakers in and around Chicago, the Midwest, and the Great Lakes region. Samain du Cinéma Fantastique 2025: Genre Weekend in The French Riviera Announces Award Winners

The return of the Samain du Cinéma Fantastique was a huge success, according to festival staff. “The festival saw a fantastic public turnout and an enthusiastic response from audiences and filmmakers alike, a real celebration of genre cinema on the French Riviera”.   With the weekend wrapped up, they passed along the winners of this year’s awards. Alex Ullom’s It Ends won the Best Film and Director awards, of course.
