This picture was made as propaganda to gain support for the League of Nations, and rumor had it that one of its backers was Bernard Baruch, head of President Wilson’s Trade Board. The story involves a patriotic old West Virginian man, known as Uncle Sam (William D. Corbett) because he always dressed up as the character for Liberty Loan rallies. His son goes to France and dies in action. The by’s sweetheart, Roma (Helen Flint), then devotes herself to helping the League of Nations. After the war’s end Sam sees America’s ideals starting to go downhill. He’s unhinged by this, and his son’s death, and finally thinks he really is Uncle Sam. Ultimately he shoots himself as a sacrifice to atone for America’s sins. Without romance, action or a happy end, this picture had little entertainment value.
