Francesco is an entrepreneur in the building industry. His company is near to collapse if it doesn’t win a deal to build a new school complex. It needs at least 60 million liras to participate to the deal, but all the banks refuse to lend the money. A corrupt bank employee introduces him to Claudio, apparently an assistant of Sergio, Francesco’s old school friend. Sergio is an accountant available to lend Francesco the money he needs. Francesco wins the deal, but soon he discovers that Claudio is not what he says.

The man they escort is Mafia-attorney Leofonte, who recently had another informer killed for mentioning his name to the police. Now it is his turn to sing, hence the heavy guard consisting of three experienced cops, two female officers and two rookies. They must also insure that his wife and children are protected from retaliation. Unfortunately, despite the caution of the police, things do not go as planned and two of them plus the lawyer’s family are slain. Now the lawyer and the others travel in fear that they too will be killed.

In 1838 in the kingdom of Naples and the Two Sicilies, Malacarne, gamekeeper of Baron San Germano, kills the bandit Caruso, whose widow gives birth to Giovanni and at the same time becomes the nurse of Costanza, San Germanos orphaned daughter. Thirteen years later, Giovanni and Costanza fall in love to the jealousy of her uncle, who shuts her in a convent, ordering Giovanni to be killed by Malacarne who has meanwhile become a bandit. Barely alive, Giovanni is taken away by Bourbon soldiers. After Garibaldis arrival in Sicily and its union with Italy, Costanza is freed from the convent and returns to San Germano. She is visited by Giovanni and although still loves him, rejects him since she wishes to become a nun. In the meantime, Giovanni kills Malacarne and takes his place. Costanza marries the rich Lo Turco and the next day departs for Naples, but during the journey the carriage is attacked by Giovannis band. Costanza flees with him and they leave for America.
