George Sidney and Charlie Murray are “Cohen and Kelly” in everything but name in this wartime farce. Shipped to Russia during the 1919 civil war between the Bolsheviks and the Royalists, American soldiers Krauss (Sidney) and Muldoon (Murray) waste no time commiserating with the local female population. Trying to sneak back to their own lines, our heroes disguise themselves as peasant girls, leading to a hilarious tete-a-tete with a pair of amorous Russian officers. Several other “Charley’s Aunt” complications are in store for Krauss and Muldoon before they attempt to end the war with a bomb-detonation device of Krauss’ invention. Lost at the Front was directed by Del Lord, future helmsman of dozens of Three Stooges comedies.

The Harvester

This first film version of the evergreen Gene Stratton-Porter novel The Harvester concerns a wealthy, domineering farm mother and her marriage-age daughter. The title character, a well-to-do herb farmer, is in love with the girl, so the mother pulls several strings to arrange a marriage. Once the knot has been tied, the girl coldly informs her husband that she married him only to pay off her debts, and that she intends to leave him for her true love, a doctor. But the doc is a “good guy,” and he spurns the girl, virtually ordering her to return to her husband and be a good and dutiful wife. Reluctantly she does so, and by film’s end she has learned to love the “harvester.” The film was remade in 1936, with Russell Hardie as the title character.

Papa Strauss, a widower, is being shifted around from one married-son’s home to the other, and is unwelcome at all because his daughter-in-laws’ object to his smelly pipe smoking. Finally the family tucks him ‘out of sight and out of mind’ into a nursing home, with very little ‘honor thy father’ thought given to it. However, unmarried daughter, Lena, who loves her father dearly, has a bright fiancée, who makes a lot of money off of a patent, and they make a home for him.
