Former D.W. Griffith associate Joseph Henaberry handled the directorial reins in Shipwrecked. Based on a popular stage play, the story takes place on board a ship bound for the South Seas. One of the passengers is escaped criminal Seena Owen, who falls in love with galley hand Joseph Schildkraut. In turn, Owen is lusted after by ship’s captain Matthew Betz, but before he can make his move, the vessel is wrecked in a storm. The captain and the crew jump ship, leaving Schildkraut and Owen to fend for themselves. The couple lands on an extradition-free South Sea island, where they hope to start life anew — until that pesky captain makes a surprise reappearance.

While a bit too old for the character supposedly in her late teens or early twenties, Laurette was tailor made for it.

Lord Cyril Wimborne, a barrister, divorces his wife, Myra, and takes custody of their child, Kenyon, when he finds her name linked with the profligate Major Pollock. Myra goes into seclusion while Pollock, intending to conceal Myra’s innocence, goes to Burma. A few years later Myra sees Kenyon in the park with Mrs. Debenham, a widow with designs on Wimborne. Noting the resemblance between the lady in the park (whom he calls his “princess”) and a photograph of his mother, Kenyon invites Myra to dinner at a time when his father, who has curtailed the visits to the park, plans to be away. At the same time Harold Courtenay, an old family friend, sees an opportunity to reunite the estranged couple.

Richard (Herbert Rawlinson), the son of Judge Garbin (David Torrence), is railroaded into prison. He angrily swears vengeance against Corton (Mike Donlin), the man who sent him and his prison mate up the river. Escaping, he returns to his father, who sends him to finish out his prison term at the home of Hugh Dunster (Alfred Fisher). Dunster forces him to do a lot of menial labor around the lonely mansion, but somehow he still finds the time to fall in love with the man’s daughter Joan (Esther Ralston). Through Joan’s good influence, he decides to drop his plan of vengeance, and Garbin sends his son on a boat to South America, where he can start his life anew. Mike Donlin — the film’s heavy — was a former ballplayer for the Giants.
