Emily Bennett, arriving in Palm Beach on a train, puts her head out of the window and her face is smudged black from the locomotive’s coal smoke. She is mistaken for a black girl and this embarrasses her two aunts who are hoping to join the Palm Beach social set. She later fails to impress playboy Jack Trotter when she bungles the christening of his motor-boat. Late she runs into some bootleggers who are loading liquor onto Jack’s boat with intent to steal the boat. They have no wish of anyone knowing their intentions, so they kidnap Emily. As it turns out, the gangsters would have been better off by just leaving Emily where she was.

Small-town barber Max Haber is the pride of his father, Johann, who owns an antiquated barbershop. Max adores Kitty Laverne, the manicurist, who loves him but is ambitious to be a dancer, so she heads for New York, hoping that he will follow in pursuit of better things. Mrs. Jackson-Greer, a New York society matron, has occasion to note Max styling the hair of a town girl and induces him to come to New York and pose as a French count. There he meets April, Mrs. King’s niece, and loses his heart to her, as well as to Kitty, now a showgirl.

This comedy-drama, based on a popular play of the era by George Broadhurst, is the classic story of a poor girl who marries a millionaire. But the millionaire, Robert Stafford (Montagu Love), is an alcoholic who, after one of his nights of heavy drinking, asserts that he “bought and paid for” Virginia, his wife (Alice Brady). Virginia finds his inebriation unbearable and decides her comfortable life isn’t worth the suffering, so she leaves him. It takes a lot of effort on the part of Virginia’s brother-in-law James (Frank Conlan) and his wife Fanny (Josephine Drake) to get the couple back together.
