This melodrama was supposedly the first to be shot on-location at an actual steel mill. Steelworker Wally Gay (William Boyd) is in love with Amy Creeth (Vera Reynolds), the daughter of the mill’s owner (Hobart Bosworth). Waldron, the superintendent (Nigel Barrie), hates Wally because he also loves Amy. The two men also have differences over other issues in addition to romance — Waldron is planning a strike, and Wally is doing everything he can to stop him. Nevertheless, Wally refuses to let his foe die — when Waldron is about to be thrown into a furnace, he comes to the rescue. Later on he rescues Amy while she and Waldron are on an inspection tour and a ladle train containing molten steel is upturned. Waldron makes a run for it, but Wally saves Amy from the molten flood. As a result he wins Creeth’s gratitude, and Amy as a wife.

Filmmaker Hugo Ballin) pulled out all the stops on this adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel of the Napoleonic era. He surrounded his wife, Mabel Ballin, who plays Becky Sharp, with sumptuous period sets and a fine cast. Ballin stays close to the novel, detailing the scheming Becky’s tumultuous rise to the top of society circles and back down again. Her ambitions begin with Joseph Sedley (Willard Louis), the brother of her wealthy school friend, Amelia (Eleanor Boardman). When he doesn’t respond to her overtures, she becomes governess for the children of Sir Pitt Crawley (Robert Mack) and secretly weds Captain Rawdon Crawley (George Walsh). Amelia meanwhile, has married her childhood sweetheart, George Osborne (Harrison Ford). Since her own marriage has not been a financial success, Becky decides to go for Amelia’s husband. Osborne dies in battle and Becky turns her attentions to the rich Marquis of Steyne (Hobart Bosworth). Her husband catcher her with the Marquis and leaves her. After helping bring Amelia together with Captain Dobbin (Earle Foxe), Becky winds up alone, spending her life doing good works. Actually, some of the casting here was too good — although this was only Eleanor Boardman’s fourth film, she got rave notices as Amelia, and the New York Times asserted that she should have played Becky instead of Mabel Ballin.

Author Anthony Hope’s sequel to The Prisoner of Zenda had been filmed once before, in 1915. But filmgoers were far more likely to compare this production to Rex Ingram’s version of Prisoner of Zenda, which was released in 1922. Rupert of Hentzau suffered greatly in comparison; in spite of lavish production values and an all-star cast, it just didn’t have the same spark as Zenda. Part of the reason is the casting — some of those big names just weren’t right for their roles. Bert Lytell was a poor replacement for Lewis Stone, Lew Cody was no Ramon Novarro, and Elaine Hammerstein was nothing more than decorative. Although Rupert of Hentzau (Cody) was supposedly killed at the end of Prisoner of Zenda, he actually escaped and is still alive to cause trouble for Queen Flavia (Hammerstein). Tired of the bad treatment she suffers at the hands of the King (Lytell), Flavia sends for his look-alike, Rudolph Rassendyll (also Lytell). But Rupert intercepts her letter and plans to use it so that he can take the throne. He kills the king and it looks like his scheme may be successful, but Rassendyll defeats him in a duel. Flavia winds up abdicating so that she can become Rassendyll’s wife.
